SocialMedia Blog #11 Octopus

Hey! This week I’d like to talk about one of my favorite animals out there, the octopus! Off the top of my head, I have to say that the octopus has the most varied utility belt of any animal. Nearly all species of octopus can spray ink to make it so predators can’t see or smell them, can change their color and texture to blend into their surroundings, and can regrow lost limbs. As well, the only hard part of a octopus’s body is its beak: this means that an octopus can squeeze through any hole larger than its beak. An octopus’s intelligence is not centralized like ours, but rather is spread throughout its body. This means that a severed tentacle may continue to hunt prey and attempt to deliver them to a nonexistent mouth. These tentacles are also famously lined with suction cups, which effortlessly latch onto anything, be it prey or a surface to climb.

Some more notable individual species include the Blue-Ringed Octopus, Mimic Octopus and Dumbo Octopus.

The Blue-Ringed Octopus is notoriously venomous, the Mimic Octopus uses its tentacles to imitate several species for defensive purposes, and the Dumbo Octopus lives over 10,000 feet below sea level and is very cute.

In addition to all of these tools, octopi are also very intelligent, being the most intelligent mollusk (though there’s little competition).

Thanks for tuning in! I think this is my last blog for my Social Media course, so thanks for reading!!
